FGCU Student-Athletes Compete in Baseball Summer Leagues
Saturday, July 10, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Although the FGCU baseball program is now in the off-season, some student-athletes on the team continue to stay active through summer competition. Currently, there are 12 baseball student-athletes in summer league programs.

Fresh off their third consecutive A-Sun regular season championship and a third straight Coach of the Year honor for Dave Tollett, the FGCU baseball program has sent 11 players to the Northwoods Summer League and one player to the Coastal Plain Summer League to help maintain their Division I playing abilities.

“It’s great for our student-athletes to remain active and compete against good competition over the summer months,” said FGCU head baseball coach Dave Tollett. “Their hard work and dedication to improving their individual skills during the off-season says a lot about the players we have in our program, and I’m excited to see the improvements they’ve made for this upcoming season.”

The Northwoods League is a summer baseball league comprised of teams of the top college players from across the nation and North America. All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. Players are not paid (this preserves their NCAA eligibility). Each team is operated similar to a professional minor league team, providing players an opportunity to play under the same conditions using wooden bats, minor league specification baseballs, experiencing overnight road trips, and playing nightly before fans in a stadium.

Eagles in Coastal Plain League
Luke Smierciak (Gainesville, Fla.) – Morehead City Marlins (.205 AVG., 13 R, 11 RBI, 10 BB)

The new and revived Coastal Plain League is a collegiate summer league, featuring top-notched college players from throughout the nation. The CPL returned to fill a void in summer baseball. With many summer leagues in operation at the time, there wasn’t really one located in the southeastern U.S. Now, in its 14th season, the CPL features 15 teams across North and South Carolina, and Virginia. The latest addition to the league was the Morehead City Marlins, which enter the league for the 2010 season.
