Swanson To Receive Honorary Letter Prior to Michigan Game
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Athletic Department will honor one of its biggest supporters on Wednesday night prior to the baseball team’s game against Michigan when it presents an Honorary Letter to longtime supporter Duane Swanson Sr.
With first pitch slated for 6:30 p.m. at Swanson Stadium, the ceremony will take place at roughly 6:15 p.m.
One of the pioneers of FGCU’s quick accent into the Division I ranks, Swanson’s involvement with athletics dates back to 2002 when he met with baseball coach Dave Tollett. Since then, Swanson has led the charge in building both the baseball and softball complexes, not only donating generously, but also getting many others to follow in his footsteps. Swanson has also been a consistent donor to the scholarship fund and in 2007 he once again led the charge in building the Outdoor Sports Complex which is home to 11 of 14 FGCU programs.
The highest honor Florida Gulf Coast University Athletics can bestow upon a non-athlete is the distinction of Honorary Letterwinner. Therefore, it is essential that those given such acclaim be individuals who were not athletes at Florida Gulf Coast University, yet have rendered outstanding service to the intercollegiate athletics program through personal time, effort, interest and through many years of continued support.
The Eagles come into the mid-week matchup holding a 3-4 record and are coming off a three-game series with Illinois last weekend. FGCU dropped the first two meetings with the Illini but rebounded with a 5-1 victory on Sunday to close the series. The Blue and Green opened the 2011 season with a four-game split with Central Michigan.
