Monday, April 18, 2011

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Fresh off an Atlantic Sun Conference series victory at Kennesaw State last weekend, the FGCU baseball team will travel to Tallahassee, Fla. for a two-game mid-week series with No. 8 Florida State. The Eagles and Seminoles will meet on Tuesday and Wednesday, with both contests scheduled for a 6 p.m. opening pitch.

The Eagles, who bring a 19-17 overall record into the contest with FSU, are coming off an A-Sun series win over KSU. The Blue and Green opened with a 20-8 victory on Friday and used a ninth inning rally to come away with a 7-6 win on Sunday to move ahead of the Owls into fifth place in the A-Sun standings with a 10-8 league mark.

Leading the Blue and Green at the dish, senior Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla./North Port HS/Pasco-Hernando CC) holds a team-best .382 average while topping the squad with 40 RBI, eight home runs and 35 runs scored, in addition to his team-high .480 on-base and .639 slugging percentages. Also finding success at the plate, junior Javi Sujo (Miami, Fla./Miami Sunset HS/Middle Georgia College) is batting .356 and freshman Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) is hitting at a .323 clip.

Sophomore lefty Kevin Bryant (Homestead, Fla./South Dade HS) (0-1) will take the mound for the Eagles in the Tuesday evening contest. Through 10 appearances, including four starts, Bryant has sat down 13 batters faced in 23 innings of work. Junior right-hander Jason Forjet (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Nova HS) (1-3) is prepared to take the hill in the Wednesday night contest, holding a 3.63 ERA to go with 35 strikeouts in 44.2 frames on the bump.

Florida State (26-10, 11-7 ACC) is scheduled to start a pair of right-handers through the pair of contests. On Tuesday, junior Gary Merians (5-2) will take the mound with a 3.41 ERA after retiring 18 hitters in 29 innings. Closing the two-game set on Wednesday, senior Tyler Everett (1-1) will bring a 1.74 ERA into the contest, after notching a trio of strikeouts in 10.1 frames.

The Seminoles are led offensively by junior outfielder James Ramsey, who is hitting .353 with a team-high 40 RBI. Devon Travis (.331), Mike McGee (.325), and Rafael Lopez (.301) also see significant playing time for ‘Noles and each sit above the .300 plateau.

FGCU has met with FSU twice previously, with the Seminoles coming away with both contests. In the two-game series during the 2009 season, the ‘Noles took game one, 11-3, and followed with an 11-9 victory in the second game of the set.
