Friday, April 22, 2011

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Tonight's game is the start of a three-game weekend set between FGCU and Le Moyne. Beginning with this series, the Eagles will play at Swanson Stadium 13 of the last 17 games, including the next three weekends. FGCU is 11-8 at Swanson this season. The three-games mark the first ever meetings between the two clubs.

NOTES FROM THE MOUND: Senior Austin Gaines is coming off an A-Sun Friday night victory at Kennesaw State last weekend and will get the start on the mound. The start at Kennesaw was the first of Gaines' career after being used as a reliever the first 16 outings over his two seasons. Gaines has 28 strikeouts over 31 innings of work, while opposing hitters are batting just .226.

APRIL POWER: The month of April has seen FGCU hit .321 as a team a huge improvement over the first six weeks of the season in which the Eagles hit .268. FGCU's three best single-game hit totals have come this month, including a Division I record 26 hits last weekend in the opener at Kennesaw State. Five different players are hitting over .340, highlighted by Zach Maxfield's .447 clip (21-47). Sophomore Mike Reeves sports an April batting average of .420 (21-50) with five doubles, while junior Javi Sujo (.380), senior Mikel Alvarez (.370) and freshman Brandon Bednar (.340) round out the top five.

SCOUTING LE MOYNE: Located in Syracuse, N.Y., Le Moyne has played 23 of its 35 games on the road en route to a 12-23 record. The Dolphins have gone 7-6 over their last 13 games, including sweeps of Bucknell (2) and Cornell (3). Junior OF Brett Botsford leads the team with a .323 batting average, while sophomore Ryan Mahoney has a team-best six home runs.

TWO MAN RACE: Seniors Zach Maxfield and Tim Roberson are battling for a pair of FGCU's all-time records over the final few months of their careers. The duo is tied for the all-time time home run lead with 40 each, while Roberson holds a 167-166 lead in RBI. Maxfield is currently the program leader in career doubles with 48.

MILESTONE WATCH: Senior Mikel Alvarez is just 10 hits away from 300 for his career. Josh Upchurch (311) is the only player in FGCU history to accomplish the feat, while five players have done so in Atlantic Sun history.
