FGCU Hosts FAU in Final Non-Conference Contest
Monday, May 09, 2011

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team will close out the non-conference portion of its schedule on Tuesday evening at Swanson Stadium when it takes on FAU for the second time this season. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.

The Eagles defeated the Owls back on April 5, taking a 9-5 decision in Boca Rotan. The visiting team has won all three meetings between the two teams.

FGCU (22-26) will look to snap a five-game losing skid on Tuesday night with a pair of crucial A-Sun weekends ahead of them. The Eagles are currently a game and half out of the sixth and final A-Sun Tournament spot with a trip to Belmont schedule for the upcoming weekend. FAU (27-19) is coming off a Sun Belt series loss at Western Kentucky and currently sit in a three-way tied for third in the league standings.

Senior Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla./North Port HS/Pasco-Hernando CC) went 3-for-4 with a home run in April’s meeting at FAU and hasn’t slowed down since, swinging his way to a .394 batting average, 19 doubles, 10 home runs and 54 RBI – all team-highs. Four other Eagles sport batting averages over .300 on the season, highlighted by senior Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Central HS) who is chasing down Josh Upchurch’s all-time hits record of 311. Alvarez is just three hits away from equaling the record.

The Owls, who own wins over Miami, UCF and Seton Hall this season, have four players hitting above the .300 mark, led by Alex Hudak’s .393 average, which goes with 35 runs scored and a team-high .468 on-base percentage. Additionally, Nick Delguidice is hitting .356 with a time-best 37 RBI and Raymond Church holds a .326 mark and leads the team with 38 runs scored.
