Barnes Selected by Milwaukee in 14th Round of MLB Draft
FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU baseball junior Jacob Barnes (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg HS) became the first current Eagle selected in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday when the Milwaukee Brewers took the hard-throwing right-hander in the 14th round with the 431st overall pick.
Barnes was not the first FGCU player selected on Tuesday, though, as incoming freshman Granden Goetzman (Palmetto, Fla./Palmetto HS) was taken with the 75th overall selection in the second round by the Tampa Bay Rays. Goetzman signed a National Letter of Intent with the Eagles in November.
It was a breakout junior campaign for Barnes, who finished as the A-Sun leader and currently ranks 10th in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings at 11.13. The St. Petersburg, Fla. native struck out 68 batters over 55 innings of work, splitting time as a starter and reliever en route to a 1-4 record, four saves and 4.58 ERA. As a team, FGCU was 4-1 in games that he started.
Barnes made a total of 20 appearances on the mound in 2011, including five starts, proving to be dominant in several relief outings. Out of seven outings with five or more strikeouts, four of them came in relief where Barnes went nine of 15 appearances without allowing an earned run. Over his first four appearances in March that totaled 13 innings, Barnes struck out 22 batters without allowing a run and closed the season with four more consecutive outings without giving up a run.
Barnes was the second player from the Atlantic Sun taken, following Mercer’s Jacob Tannis who was taken by the Oakland Athletics in the 13th round (#406).
Both players will still have the option of joining the Eagles in the fall if they don’t sign a professional contract with the organizations that drafted them. Goetzman was tabbed as the fourth-best corner outfielder in Baseball America draft preview issue.
The second day of the MLB First-Year Player Draft will go through round 30 and can be followed live on www.MLB.com. The draft will conclude with rounds 31-50 on Wednesday.
