FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team continues its season-opening 11-game homestand this weekend, as Bryant University travels to Swanson Stadium for a three-game series. The opening contest is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch on Friday, followed by a 2 p.m. game on Saturday and a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.

FGCU enters the contest with a 1-3 record, coming off a 3-0 defeat at the hands of No. 12 Miami on Wednesday at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla. The Eagles found scoring opportunities in both the eighth and ninth innings but the Hurricanes halted both chances, including a bases loaded situation in the ninth, to preserve the three-run victory.

The Eagles will use a rotation featuring senior righty Jason Forjet (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Nova HS) on Friday, followed by lefties Andrew Polly (Broken Arrow, Okla./Tulsa Union HS/Cowley County CC) and Brandon Bixler (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Earning a no-decision in his first start of the season, Forjet turned in an impressive 10-strikeout, four-hit performance against Bethune-Cookman, allowing just one unearned run through his six innings on the mound. With a 0.00 ERA, the Pembroke Pines, Fla. product holds an opponent batting average of .167.

In his first appearance of the season, Polly was utilized in an extended relief effort in the Eagles’ victory over B-CU. The junior southpaw hurled 5.2 innings while allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits, adding a strikeout to his final line. The Broken Arrow, Okla. native’s ERA currently sits at 1.59.

Making his second start of the year on Sunday, Bixler enters the contest with an 0-1 record. The sophomore threw four innings against the Wildcats, picking up five strikeouts while walking four batters and allowing just one hit. Surrendering two runs (one earned) in his season debut, Bixler owns a 2.25 ERA and an opponent average at .083.

Offensively, the Green and Blue are hitting a combined .219 with 14 runs scored and 14 RBI. Starting all four contests for the Eagles, sophomore Sean Dwyer (Tavares, Fla./Tavares HS) is batting .286 with three runs scored and three RBI, claiming one of FGCU’s two home runs. Also starting every game, sophomore Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) is hitting .250 with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior Dane Wisneski (Jupiter, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens HS/Daytona State College) has gone 3-for-6 through his two starts, for a .500 batting average.

Bryant (2-1) opened its season with three games at the newly-renovated USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C., earning victories over St. Joseph’s (4-1) and Wright State (2-0) before falling to Marshall (16-2). Located in Smithville, R.I., the Bulldogs are led at the plate by Mike DelPonte’s .375 batting average, adding two RBI and a run scored. Meanwhile, Dan Muscatello and Daniel St. George are also hitting .333.

The Bulldogs plan to start a trio of right-handers through the three-game series. Junior Peter Kelich (1-0, 1.50 ERA) will likely open the weekend on the mound, with classmate Joe Michaud (1-0, 0.00 ERA) and sophomore Craig Schlitter (0-0, 0.00 ERA) finishing out the rotation on Saturday and Sunday.

The three-game weekend set will mark the first time the programs have competed against one another.
