FORT MYERS, Fla. – In the first contest in the three-game set, the FGCU baseball team fell to Boston College, 3-0, on Thursday evening at Swanson Stadium. BC utilized six different arms on the mound to combine for the victory over the Green and Blue.

FGCU’s record fell to 5-4 in the loss, while BC improved to 5-2 this season.

Boston College plated one run in both the second and third innings. A two-out triple to deep centerfield by Spenser Payne was immediately followed by a double down the right field line from Tyler Hinchliffe, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the second. BC doubled its score to 2-0 in the third, when an RBI single through the left side by Anthony Melchionda scored Matt McGovern from second base.

The visitors went ahead 3-0 in the top of the seventh after finding runners on first and second with two outs. Payne picked up the RBI on the play, sending a single through the left side to bring Melchionda in from second.

The hometown Eagles found their best opportunity of the game in their first chance at the plate. Sophomore Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) opened the inning with a single up the middle, but was caught stealing during Ryan Gebhart’s (Waco, Texas/Midway HS/Missouri) first at-bat of the evening. Picking up FGCU’s second of four hits on the night, Gebhart singled through the right side and proceeded to swipe second base on a breaking ball in the dirt. BC worked out of the frame by registering consecutive strikeouts following Gebhart’s action on the base path.

Aside from the hits by Bednar and Gebhart, the Green and Blue also tallied singles off the bat of freshman Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) in the seventh and sophomore Sean Dwyer (Tavares, Fla./Tavares HS) in the ninth. Unable to plate a run in the contest, it marks just the second time this season in which FGCU has been held scoreless.

In his third start of the year, senior right-hander Jason Forjet (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Nova HS) (0-1) picked up loss in the contest after throwing 5.1 innings and allowing a pair of earned runs on eight hits, while adding three strikeouts. Junior lefty Kevin Bryant (Homestead, Fla./South Dade HS) entered in relief, and surrendered one earned run on one hit and two walks in 1.1 innings on the mound. Junior southpaw RJ Brown (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale HS) closed out the final 2.1 frames, recording three strikeouts while giving up two hits and a walk.

BC had a strong showing on the mound, as six pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and just two walks against FGCU. Leading the staff with three innings in relief, left-handed freshman Nick Poore totaled three punch outs while improving to 1-0 this season.

The two teams will back in action on Friday, March 2, with first pitch from Swanson Stadium scheduled for 6:30 p.m. FGCU intends to start junior lefty Andrew Polly (Broken Arrow, Okla./Tulsa Union HS/Cowley County CC), while BC will send sophomore righty Eric Stevens to the hill. The final contest in the three-game series is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
