Feature Article: Sox's Sale Ready for Anything
GLENDALE, Ariz. — When hotshot prospect Chris Sale first arrived at Florida Gulf Coast University for fall baseball in 2007, the talent obvious in Sale's wicked fastball and whip-like release piqued curiosity.
But perhaps no question about Sale came up more than this one: How does a body that skinny carry a head so big? The pitcher walked around the Fort Myers, Fla., campus as if he considered himself the Sale of the century.
"He was a little cocky,'' recalled Cubs pitcher Casey Coleman, a college teammate.
The Rockies took Sale in the 21st round of the 2007 amateur draft. Apparently he spent the rest of that summer deciding whether to attend college or go straight to Cooperstown.
"I was on my high horse,'' Sale admitted Thursday. "It took a long time to humble myself.''
Humility said hello with a thud. During FGCU's annual intrasquad game, Sale came on to close what looked like a sure victory. The batter facing Sale was a pitcher making his first at-bat of the fall season. He hit a walk-off home run.
