FORT MYERS, Fla. – In a contest which lasted nearly four hours and saw a combined 19 runs scored and 24 hits, the FGCU baseball team fell to visiting Boston College, 11-8, on Friday evening at Swanson Stadium in game two of the three-game series.
The Green and Blue dropped their mark to 5-5 with the loss, while BC improved to 6-2 in the victory.
In the top of the second Boston College jumped ahead on the scoreboard, moving six runners around the bases on five hits and one FGCU error.
The Green and Blue made it a 6-1 game in the home side of the second, finding the bases loaded with one out after junior Dane Wisneski (Jupiter, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens HS/Daytona State College) was hit by a pitch, freshman Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) reached on error by the shortstop, and junior Tito Mendoza (Miramar, Fla./Cooper City HS/Cowley CC) was issued a walk. Picking up his fifth RBI of the season, redshirt freshman Alex Diaz (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson HS) brought Wisneski in from third on a routine groundout to the second baseman.
The top of the third marked the third-straight half inning in which at least one run came across the plate, as BC scored one more in its chance at the dish. Singles from Spencer Payne and John Hennessy put runners on first and second with one out in the inning. Another single to left field from Nate LaPointe gave Boston College a six-run advantage as Payne scored from second. In the sixth inning, BC tacked on one more run on a pair of hits, extending its lead 8-1.
FGCU opened up offensively in the bottom of the sixth, bringing five runs across the plate. With the bases loaded and no outs, a groundout to first base by Suchy allowed classmate Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) to score from third, after reaching on a walk to begin the frame. The Green and Blue reloaded the bases in the next at-bat when Mendoza drew a full count walk. Later in the inning with two outs, sophomore Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) cut the deficit to 8-6 by smashing an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall for FGCU's first grand slam of the season, and his first career home run.
With two outs, BC took an 11-6 lead in the seventh following a single and a pair of walks to load the bases. Immediately following an FGCU pitching change, Matt McGovern roped a bases-clearing double to left center for the five-run lead.
The hometown Eagles’ last effort at a comeback occurred in the eighth after Suchy opened the inning with a full-count walk. Singling to right field, Mendoza advanced Suchy to second as freshman Kevin Young (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra Beach HS) stepped to the plate for his first collegiate at-bat. As BC tried to turn a 6-4-3 double play, Young was able to reach first on an errant throw by the second baseman, which also allowed Suchy to come in to score from third. Later in the frame with one out, graduate student Ryan Gebhart (Waco, Texas/Midway HS/Missouri) extending his hitting streak to seven games with a single through the left side, scoring Young and bringing the score to 11-8. It would ultimately be the last score of the contest, as Boston College retired FGCU in order in the ninth to hold on to the three-run victory.
FGCU plated eight runs on seven hits and a pair of BC errors. Tallying four RBI and a run scored on the grand slam, Bednar went 1-for-4 on the night with a walk and now has a team-high 10 runs scored this season. While increasing his hitting streak, Gebhart went 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Suchy and Diaz added FGCU’s other two RBI in the game.
Junior lefty Andrew Polly (Broken Arrow, Okla./Tulsa Union HS/Cowley County CC) (1-1) was credited with the loss after throwing 1.2 innings and allowing six earned runs on five hits, with one walk and one strikeout. Left-handed junior RJ Brown (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale HS) threw 1.1 innings with two hits and strikeout, while freshman righty Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) picked up his seventh-straight scoreless inning with one hit and one punch out in the ninth.
BC scored 11 runs on 17 hits and two FGCU errors. Starting the contest and throwing the first five innings, right-hander Eric Stevens (2-0) earned the win after allowing just one unearned run on two hits, to go with four walks and four strikeouts.
