FORT MYERS, Fla. – After dropping three close games with No. 1 Florida last weekend in Gainesville, Fla., the FGCU baseball team will look to bounce back in a two-game midweek series with Rutgers. The two contests are slated for a 6:30 p.m. start on both Tuesday and Wednesday evening at Swanson Stadium.

Coming off the first road trip of the season, the Eagles enter the midweek meetings with a 6-8 overall record. The Eagles battled the No. 1 Gators over the three games in Gainesville, but UF completed the weekend sweep with a close 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at McKethan Stadium. FGCU held the nation’s No. 1 team to season-lows of four hits and three runs in the series finale, while accumulating seven punch outs which is the most by the Gators this season.

Over the last 10 games, the Eagles have been led at the plate by senior centerfielder Ryan Gebhart’s (Waco, Texas/Midway HS/Missouri) .351 average, driving in six RBI and scoring eight runs with a pair of stolen bases. The Waco, Texas product holds a team-high five extra base hits and is 4-for-5 in his stolen base attempts this season. Meanwhile, sophomore Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) has scored a team-high 12 times and owns a team-best .296 average on the year. In the last 10 contests, Bednar is hitting at a .316 clip with 10 runs scored and six RBI.

With conference play beginning this weekend, the Eagles intend to utilize a combination of arms in the Tuesday evening contest. Making his first start of the season on Wednesday, junior lefty Kevin Bryant (Homestead, Fla./South Dade HS) enters the contest with an 0-0 record, after appearing as a reliever in three contests and working 2.2 innings on the mound.

The midweek series will mark the first two meetings between the programs.

Rutgers (5-7) is coming off a three-game weekend set at FAU, in which the Scarlet Knights took two of three (L 5-2, W 6-3, W 10-4). Rutgers was swept by then-No. 13 Miami to begin the season in Coral Gables, Fla., and also by then-No. 12 Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga. The Scarlet Knights’ other three victories on the year came in a three-game sweep of Old Dominion (8-6, 11-8, 5-1) in Norfolk, Va.

Leading the Scarlet Knights at the plate, Ross Costello is hitting .440 with five RBI and four runs scored, while Charlie Law (.321), Patrick Kivlehan (.308) and Brian O’Grady (.302) are also above the .300 mark. Rutgers intends to throw right-hander Slater McCue (0-0, 13.50 ERA) on Tuesday and follow with righty Tyler Gebler (0-0, 7.00 ERA) on Wednesday.
