FORT MYERS, Fla. – ETSU junior right-hander Derek Bushey tossed seven scoreless innings to help the Buccaneers pick up a 7-2 win over FGCU to even the weekend Atlantic Sun series heading into Sunday’s noon finale at Swanson Stadium.

Less than 24 hours after FGCU righty Ricky Knapp (Port Charlotte, Fla./Port Charlotte HS) led the Eagles (9-14, 3-2 A-Sun) to a win with a complete-game shutout, ETSU (12-9, 2-3 A-Sun) got a stellar performance from Bushey to the tune of seven scoreless innings, two hits and a career-high nine strikeouts.

ETSU limited the Eagles to just two runs off five hits, while the eight of nine positional starters for the Bucs were a part of their 11-hit afternoon. Dylan Pratt had the best day at the dish, providing ETSU with a pair of home runs to the opposite field during a 2-for-4 day with three RBI.

Junior left-hander Andrew Polly (Broken Arrow, Okla./Tulsa Union HS/Cowley County CC) lasted just three innings in his fourth start of the season, giving up four runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Polly was dealt the loss to slip to 2-2.

Both of FGCU’s runs came off the bat of sophomore catcher Andrew Valencia (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), who cracked a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to get the Eagles on the scoreboard. Valencia’s double was his team-leading 14th extra-base hit and it also extended his hit streak to 13 games. In five A-Sun games this year, Valencia has driven in 10 runs on five extra-base hits (3 2B, 2 HR).

Junior Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary) had the only multi-hit afternoon for the Eagles, going 2-for-4 in the designated hitter role.

ETSU got to Polly in the second and third, plating two runs in each inning to take a 4-0 lead. FGCU turned to freshman Jack English (Delray Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) in the fourth and the right-hander struck out the side on just 13 pitches. English finished with four strikeouts over 3.2 scoreless innings, buying time for the Eagles to come back.

Unfortunately, FGCU couldn’t solve Bushey over his seven innings and the Bucs tacked on two more in the top of the eighth to push their lead to 6-0.
