FORT MYERS, Fla. – Facing its second ranked opponent in as many days, the FGCU baseball team will make the trip across Alligator Alley on Wednesday evening to take on No. 7 Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. beginning at 6 p.m.
Earning just the third victory in program history over a ranked opponent, the Eagles’ record improved to 13-20 this season with the 6-5 walk-off victory over No. 28 FAU on Tuesday evening at Swanson Stadium. After a one-run lead diminished in the top of the ninth, the Eagles responded in the home half of the inning, as sophomore Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) delivered a one-out single up the middle to plate the game-winning run. The victory also marked the second win over a ranked foe this season, as the Green and Blue took down then-No. 2 Florida State last week in Tallahassee, Fla., 5-1.
The Eagles will send freshman right-hander Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) to the mound for his first career start. Through four appearances, Tillery (0-0) owns a 2.45 ERA with one strikeout in 7.1 innings of work.
Leading the Eagles offensively, Bednar and senior Ryan Gebhart (Waco, Texas/Midway HS/Missouri) are each hitting .275. Stealing seven bases in nine attempts, Gebhart leads the team with 24 runs scored, while Bednar has scored 19 times and driven in 12 RBI. In the middle of the lineup, sophomores Sean Dwyer (Tavares, Fla./Tavares HS) and Andrew Valencia (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) are batting .244 and .227, respectively, each scoring 13 times. Valencia leads the team in extra-base hits (17), home runs (6), total bases (54), slugging percentage (.491) and RBI (30).
The Hurricanes bring a 22-8 (11-4 ACC) overall record in to the contest, following weekend sweep of No. 3 North Carolina (W 8-0, W 4-3, W 4-0) in ACC action. Bethune-Cookman transfer Peter O’Brien leads UM at the plate, hitting .357 with 28 runs scored and 36 RBI. Also above the .300 mark, Brad Fieger is batting .341 for the Canes. Miami will send right-hander Javi Salas (3-1, 3.20 ERA) to the hill to start the contest.
Miami took game one of the 2012 series with the Eagles by a final score of 3-0 at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla on Feb. 22. The two teams will meet one more time this season, as the Green and Blue head back to Coral Gables on May 15 at 6 p.m.
