JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A six-run third inning by Jacksonville highlighted an 8-0 start for the Dolphins, as the FGCU baseball team dropped its Atlantic Sun weekend series finale, 9-4, on Sunday at Sessions Stadium.

JU took the last two games of the weekend series to move to 14-23 overall and 4-8 in the A-Sun. FGCU won a season-high four straight games, including a triumph at No. 6 Miami, before dropping the final two games of the series to slip to 15-22 and 6-9 in league action.

Senior right-hander Jason Forjet (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Nova HS) ran into big trouble early in the game, allowing six runs on seven hits in just two innings of work in the loss (0-3). Forjet left in the top of third without recording an out after the first four batters reached base. Junior R.J. Brown (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale HS) worked the final six innings, allowing three runs, but just one after the third, on six hits while striking out four with no walks.

Jacksonville starter Chris Anderson opened with five straight scoreless innings before giving up three runs in the sixth while getting just one out. FGCU’s three runs came with the Dolphins holding an 8-0, as Anderson got the win on the mound to improve to 4-3.

At the plate, sophomore Sean Dwyer (Tavares, Fla./Tavares HS) capped a strong week by going 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Dwyer had five hits in the weekend series, and hit .444 (8-18) for the five-game week with three doubles, a home run and eight RBI.

Batting leadoff the whole series, senior Ryan Gebhart (Waco, Texas/Midway HS) scored two of FGCU’s four runs in the finale. Gebhart reached base in 9-of-15 plate appearances thanks to three hits and five walks. Sophomore Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) drove in a run in the three-run third for FGCU with an RBI single. Bednar’s single extended his hit streak to nine games.

The top five spots in the Jacksonville lineup went a combined 11-for-23 with seven runs scored and five RBI in a 13-hit afternoon for the home team. In Jacksonville’s game-changing six-run third inning, four of five previously mentioned batters opened the inning with a hit and came around to score.

Although it scored three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh, FGCU left the bases loaded in both frames. For the second straight game, the Eagles left double-digit runners on base (10) and a combined 24 in the last two contests.

FGCU will have four days off from game action until it travels west for a three-game non-conference weekend series at Mountain West foe New Mexico (17-17). Game one of the series will start at 2 p.m. ET on Friday, April 20.
