NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Less than 24 hours after scoring a season-high eight runs, the FGCU baseball team was kept off the scoreboard on Sunday thanks to a complete game performance from Lipscomb right-hander Josh Catham in a 11-0 Atlantic Sun series loss on Sunday at Dugan Field.
Catham’s four-hitter helped the Bisons pick up their first shutout since 2010 and moved Lipscomb a game up on the Eagles in the A-Sun standings at 11-10. FGCU now stands at 19-28 overall and 10-11 in the A-Sun to sit in a tie with Mercer for sixth place.
A week removed from striking out 14 batters en route to earning multiple Pitcher of the Week honors from the conference office and national media, sophomore lefty Brandon Bixler (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) earned the loss after giving up three runs on four hits and four walks. Bixler fell to 3-5 on the season.
FGCU managed to move just three runners into scoring position the entire game, as Catham struck out seven batters and walked none over his economical 104-pitch performance. The win improved him to 4-4 on the year.
Bixler worked out of jams in two of the first three innings, but gave up one run in the fourth and was charged with two in the fifth after leaving without getting an out. Sophomore Harrison Cooney (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach HS) replaced Bixler and didn’t fare well, getting just two outs as the Bisons used a six-run inning to break open the game and take a 7-0 lead.
Lipscomb added four more runs in the eighth for the 11-0 final, as the Eagles used a total of five pitchers. Bixler’s four innings marked the first time in the last six A-Sun games that an FGCU starter hasn’t lasted at least seven innings.
FGCU will be back in action on Tuesday when it heads across the state to take on FAU. Gametime is slated for 6:30 p.m. The two teams met on April 10 at Swanson Stadium with the Eagles defeating the then-No. 28 Owls, 6-5.
