FORT MYERS, Fla. – Behind a strong outing by junior right hander Ricky Knapp (Port Charlotte, Fla./Port Charlotte HS), the No. 26 FGCU baseball team was able to shutout Atlantic Sun Conference (A-Sun) opponent Lipscomb, 8-0, in the series opener Friday night in the first game of a three-game series at Swanson Stadium.
The Eagles improve to 17-5 on the year and 3-1 in A-Sun play while the Bisons drop to 9-18 and 1-3 in conference action. This marks the sixth shutout this season for the Green and Blue and second shutout this year when Knapp has started the game. FGCU also improves the all-time series against Lipscomb to 11-5.
“Knapp had yet another strong start on the mound and we saw a very good offensive performance today out of Beisner and others in our lineup,” said head coach Dave Tollett. “I’m pleased with our performance overall and hope to see more of it through the final two games of this series.”
Sophomore Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) helped bring across the game’s first run by doubling to right field to make it 1-0 Eagles in the home half of the second inning.
In the bottom of the third, FGCU broke through offensively to pull away from Lipscomb. Facing a 3-2 count, junior Sean Dwyer (Taveras, Fla./Taveras HS) flied out to right field to bring across the second run of the contest. With one out, redshirt senior Brooks Beisner (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Auburn) singled to bring across another FGCU base runner to make it 3-0 Eagles. FGCU continued to be active on the base paths by bringing across two more runs, both courtesy of wild pitches. Freshman Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) crossed home plate as well in the third to add to the Eagle advantage. FGCU would then use a single from redshirt sophomore Alex Diaz (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson HS) to bring across another run, which completed a six-run inning for the Green and Blue.
A single through the left side from sophomore Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) put FGCU on the board in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-0 which the Eagles would hold on to the rest of the game.
Knapp had a strong outing, scattering five hits and fanning seven batters over 6.2 scoreless innings of work. Redshirt freshman Gabe Rivera (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) relieved Knapp with two outs in the seventh and was able to get the final out of the inning. Rivera would go on and get through the eighth before he handed the ball over to graduate Ritchie Erath (West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Central HS) who tossed the final inning, giving up two hits and struck out one batter.
Beisner led the offense against the Bisons, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Tillery tallied two RBI on one double in the victory. Dwyer and Suchy each recorded a hit and a RBI apiece. Freshman Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS), senior Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary) and Diaz each collected a hit in the shutout win.
The Eagles will face Lipscomb tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the second game of the three-game series at Swanson Stadium.
