FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team wrapped up the two-game mid-week series with Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday evening at Swanson Stadium, falling on the wrong side of an 8-7 decision with the Wildcats in 10 innings.

FGCU dropped to 22-16 in the losing effort, while B-CU improved to 28-19 with the victory.

After scoring one in the first, B-CU brought in three more in the third, highlighted by a solo home run off the bat of David Lee, to establish a 4-0 lead through the opening frames.

A four-run fourth inning by the Eagles brought the score even, beginning with a lead off single into right field by senior Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary). Later in the inning with two outs, a single through the left side by sophomore Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) and a walk to freshman Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) loaded the bases for the Green and Blue.  Redshirt senior Brooks Beisner (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Auburn) brought in the first tally on a hit-by-pitch and the second run was allowed on a walk to freshman Colton Bottomley (Davie, Fla./Marjorie Stoneman Douglas HS). The same hit-by-pitch and walk combination was issued to redshirt sophomore Alex Diaz (Miami, Fla./Ferguson HS) and freshman Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS), respectively, to bring the score to 4-4 through four.

The Wildcats responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to move out in front 7-4. Following a two-out single up the middle and a hit-by-pitch, B-CU connected for singles in the next three at-bats to move the runs across the plate.

FGCU answered with a pair in the home half of the fifth, opening the inning with a single up the middle by junior Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) and a walk to Dwyer. Suchy was able to load the bases for the Green and Blue on a bunt single down the third base line, giving Rivera a chance to score Bednar on a fielder’s choice at second base. With bases loaded yet again on a walk to Beisner, the Eagles made it 7-6 on a sacrifice fly to centerfield off the bat of Bottomley.

The Eagles knotted the game at 7-7 in the home side of the seventh when Beisner walked and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bottomley and a grounder to short from Diaz. FGCU found the bags full again on consecutive walks to Selesky and Reeves, setting up Bednar’s chopper to the third baseman which allowed Beisner to score. Both teams went away quietly over the final two innings to force the extra frame.

Back-to-back outs started the top of the 10th for the Wildcats before a double to centerfield from Shaun McCarty got the inning going. B-CU plated the decisive run on a RBI double down the left field line from Josh Johnson to take an 8-7 edge.

Finding runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the 10th on a walk to Dwyer and a single by Suchy, the Eagles left the tying and go-ahead runners stranded on a fly ball to centerfield that finalized the contest.

The Eagles scored seven runs on 10 hits and were led by a 4-for-6 game by Suchy, which included a run scored. Bednar drove in a RBI and scored once in a 2-for-5 day, and Beisner scored twice and brought in one RBI while hitting 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. Reeves and Dwyer each went 1-for-4 on the night with a run scored, adding one and two walks, respectively.

Going the final three innings, junior right-hander Harrison Cooney (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach HS) (2-4) was hit with the loss after surrendering one run on two hits and two walks while striking out one.

B-CU scored eight runs on 11 hits and one FGCU error. Senior righty Jordan Dailey (5-0) picked up the win after tossing 3.1 scoreless innings and allowing two hits and one walk
