FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th, redshirt senior Brooks Beisner (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Auburn) sent the Eagles home winners with a walk-off RBI single up the middle, as the Green and Blue took game two of the three-game Atlantic Sun weekend series with Northern Kentucky, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Swanson Stadium.
After sophomore Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to second on a hit-by-pitch to junior Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS), the Green and Blue found the bases full with the score knotted at 2-2 on a four-pitch walk to freshman Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS). Giving the Eagles their fourth walk-off victory of the season, Beisner battled back from a 0-2 count and roped a single back up the middle to bring in Suchy for the game-winning run.
Claiming the A-Sun series win in the victory following the 6-1 win on Friday, the Eagles’ record climbed to 24-16 this season with a 10-7 mark in league action.
Earning a no-decision after a strong start, freshman right-hander Michael Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forest Hill HS) recorded 11-straight outs to open the contest, surrendering a walk with two outs in the fourth for the first NKU base runner of the game. The West Palm Beach, Fla. native went six innings and finished the contest with a pair of runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out a career-best 10 strikeouts.
FGCU took a one-run lead in its first chance at the plate when junior Sean Dwyer (Tavares, Fla./Tavares HS) sent an RBI double down the left field line to score Bednar, who had reached on a two-out single deep in the hole at short.
The lead doubled to 2-0 in the home half of the fourth when Dwyer walked to open the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Rivera. With runners on a first and second following a walk to Beisner, sophomore Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) added a RBI to his season totals with a single through the left side that moved Dwyer across the dish.
Held hitless through the opening four innings, the Norse broke into the hits and runs column with one swing of the bat on a solo home run in the top of the fifth from freshman catcher Cody Kuzniczci. NKU leveled the game at 2-2 later in the inning on back-to-back one-out doubles. The deadlock held over the final four innings to force the extra frame.
The Eagles scored three runs on eight hits, led by Dwyer going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, one RBI and one run scored. Beisner brought in the game-winning RBI in a 2-for-4 day that included a double and a walk. Bednar also supplied a multi-hit game for the Eagles, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Tossing the final four innings for the Green and Blue, sophomore right-hander Jack English (Delray Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) earned his first career win (1-1), allowing one hit and one walk while recording five strikeouts.
Falling to 8-34 (3-14 A-Sun) this season, NKU scored two runs on four hits in the game. In two innings on the mound, senior right-hander Brett Loeding was issued the loss (2-5) after being credited with the game-winning run allowed.
The two schools are set to return to Swanson Stadium to close the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at noon. The Eagles will send junior right-hander Harrison Cooney (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach HS) to the mound for his first start of the year to square off against NKU senior righty Blake Bagshaw.
