Productive Road Swing Earns Dwyer Atlantic Sun Player of the Week
FORT MYERS, Fla. – For his stellar play over the five-game road trip last week, FGCU baseball junior Sean Dwyer (Tavares, Fla./Tavares HS) was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday morning.
Helping the Eagles continue a stretch of solid play that has seen 12 wins in the last 13 games, Dwyer hit .455 (10-for-22) with three walks over the five road games last week, bringing in five RBI and recording team-highs of eight runs scored and three home runs. Also leading the team with a .864 slugging percentage, the Tavares, Fla. product reached base at a .520 rate in those contests.
In the doubleheader meeting at FAMU (May 8) last Wednesday, Dwyer went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI in game one and followed with a pair of home runs and a walk in a 2-for-4 second contest, collecting three RBI and three runs scored.
Dwyer’s bat stayed active in the A-Sun series win over North Florida last weekend, connecting at a .462 rate (6-for-13) with a home run and three RBI over the trio of games. In the Friday night opener, the third-year player went 2-for-5 with a run scored, and followed that up by going 3-for-4 with a walk and a home run, one run scored and two RBI in Saturday’s game two.
This season, Dwyer is hitting .310 with a team-best .497 slugging percentage while adding 20 extra-base hits, including a six home runs and a team-leading five triples. Starting all 51 games this year for the Green and Blue, Dwyer has driven in 38 RBI and is one of three players on the team to record at least 40 runs scored.
It’s the first A-Sun weekly honor of the season for Dwyer, and the second of his career. It’s also the third A-Sun Player of the Week honor for the Eagles, and second straight, this season. Sophomore Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) earned the award last week (May 6) and redshirt senior Brooks Beisner (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Auburn) picked up the recognition earlier this season (Feb. 25). Junior right-hander Ricky Knapp (Port Charlotte, Fla./Port Charlotte HS) has also twice been named the league’s Pitcher of the Week this year (Feb. 25, April 29).
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday when they play host to in-state foe USF, which was ranked as high as No. 20 according to the Collegiate Baseball poll last week, beginning at 6:30 p.m. A full preview of the midweek non-conference meeting will be available at www.FGCUATHLETICS.com on Monday.
