HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- The FGCU baseball team (31-17, 14-6 Atlantic Sun) hit three more homeruns on Saturday afternoon and tied a season-high with 17 runs at Northern Kentucky (13-30, 6-14 A-Sun), securing a series victory and giving FGCU an opportunity to pick up a sweep against an A-Sun opponent for the second time this season. The series with the Norse will conclude tomorrow at Noon.
Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) took the mound on Saturday afternoon and tossed a solid 6.0 innings, giving up seven hits and striking out three to earn his third victory of the season. Mario Leon (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast HS) worked a scoreless seventh and Brad Labozzetta (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland HS) cleaned up the eighth and ninth to secure the 17-5 victory.
The Eagles collected 21 hits at the plate including a trio of homeruns for the second-straight day. Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) homered twice, including a grand slam in the second, giving him three for the series, six in A-Sun play and seven this season, matching his 2013 total. He finished Saturday 3-4 at the plate with four runs scored and five RBI to go with a pair of walks. Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) hit his third long ball of the year and drove in four while junior catcher Blake Berger (Jacksonville, Fla./Santa Fe College) went 4-5 at the plate, scored twice and drove in two. Every bat in the starting lineup would pick up at least one hit while six would register multiple.
“We took care of business today and put ourselves in position to get a sweep,” head coach Dave Tollett added. “A sweep in this league, especially this time of year, is huge and we have given ourselves that chance.”
Suchy got the Eagles started in the top of the first with a two-out walk. Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) followed with a walk bringing up Tillery who singled back through the middle to drive in the game’s first run and giving Anderson a 1-0 lead to work with before ever taking the mound.
NKU would pick up two hits in the bottom of the first however and bring in the tying run before FGCU broke things open in the second. Cody Hoffner (Sebring, Fla./Broward College) led off the second with a walk followed by two quick outs. Gage Morey (West Palm Beach, Fla./PB Central) singled to move Hoffner to second bringing Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) to the plate who doubled for his only hit of the game, driving in Hoffner. Colton Bottomley (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS) followed with a walk to load the bases for Suchy who launched a long shot over the left field wall for a grand slam to push the Eagles ahead 6-1.
The Norse picked up a run in the bottom of the second and FGCU answered back with a run in the third and another homerun from Suchy in the fourth to extend the lead to 8-2. Leading 8-3 now after NKU added a run in the bottom of the fifth, Bottomley singled and Suchy walked for Rivera who hit his league-leading 18th double into the left-center field gap to make it 9-3. Tillery then came up and let loose a soaring three-run homerun over the center field fence to open up a 12-3 advantage for the Green and Blue but they were not done in the sixth. The Eagles picked up back-to-back doubles from Hoffner and Berger to score the fifth run of the frame and Morey doubled with one away to make it 14-3.
The Eagles would tack on three more runs the rest of the way and NKU would add a pair of solo homeruns to provide the final score of 17-5. FGCU has swept just one other A-Sun opponent this season, coming against USC Upstate to kick off the conference schedule.
Mike Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forrest Hill HS), worked through 6.0 innings and gave up nine hits to go with four earned runs while walking two and striking out six in an 8-5 victory, extending his league-lead in punch outs to 71 and bringing his A-Sun leading ERA to 1.51. Murray is one of just two pitchers in FGCU history to win double-digit games along with fellow wins-record holder Chris Sale. He is also one of just nine pitchers in the A-Sun in the last 10 years to win double-digit games in a season. Murray is on pace for at least two more starts before the conclusion of the regular season.
Following the weekend series the Green and Blue will head down to Coral Gables to face off against No. 4 Miami (32-13, 19-5 ACC) in a midweek matchup, Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
