Eagles dominate in school's first win
Fort Myers – The FGCU baseball team took the field for the first time in school history tonight at Hammond Stadium, and defeated Savannah College of Art & Design 12-0.
With a crowd of close to 800 fans on hand, the eagle’s didn’t disappoint anyone as Jason Short pitched a gem, going 7 innings, striking out 8, and only giving up 2 hits.
Short, only a freshman, earns his first career shut out, and first career win in FGCU history.
The eagle’s got on the board in the second inning as Chris Brown scored the school’s first ever run on a fielder’s choice hit by Frank Hernandez. Hernandez earns the school’s first ever RBI.
Freshman center fielder Travis Cunningham led the way offensively tonight as the speedster blasted a grand slam to give the eagles a 5-0 lead in the second. This set the tone all night as the eagle’s would get good offensive production from five other players.
Junior left fielder David Cox had an impressive start as he went 2-4, scored 2 runs, and had 2 RBI’s as well. Cox crushed a Harold Jones fastball in the second that barely missed leaving the ballpark in left-center field as he ended up with at triple. Cox also doubled on the night.
Junior third basemen Chad Kennedy played an impressive defensive game at the hot corner, as the Charlotte High product made nice plays early on.
Freshman out fielder Frank Hernandez Jr. turned in a solid performance as he went 1-2 with a pair of RBI’s.
Even more impressive was the eagle bullpen tonight as Tony Korson pitched one inning in relief giving up no hits or runs, and striking out a pair.
Chris Cahill finished the game as he threw an inning, and struck out a pair of his own.
Savannah was led by Catcher Jarrod Norrell who went 1-3, and Chris Tirro who went 1-3 on the night as well.
SCAD starting pitcher Harold Jones went 5 innings, giving up 4 earned runs.
The Eagles improve to 1-0, and will play the rematch with SCAD tomorrow at Terry Park. The first pitch will be at 12:30, which is a change from the original 1:00 start.
