Chris Brown leads Eagles over Bison 15-8
Fort Myers, FL – Chris Brown and the Eagles bats had a big day as the FGCU Eagles out slugged the Bison of North Dakota State University 15-8. The Eagles are now 20-9 on the season.
On a clear Monday night the Eagles got out front early in the first inning on a two run triple from First Baseman Chris Brown. The drive to deep right center field scored Travis Cunningham and Rene Ruiz, both of whom singled to start the inning. Brown later scored on a wild pitch from starting pitcher Greg Ford. Second baseman Kip Perry then got an infield single to the shortstop and designated hitter Adam Masino followed with a triple just over the outreached hands of the right fielder to drive in Perry, making the score 4-0.
The Eagles tacked on another run in the third to make the score 5-0. Catcher Jason Cooper led off the inning with a walk and Brown singled him over to second. Right fielder Mike Mathews then drove in Cooper with a two-strike single to right field.
The Bison got on the board in the next inning on an RBI double by catcher Chris Baso. The hit scored leadoff man Jeremiah Piepkorn who had singled in the previous at bat. After Eagle pitcher Ryan Williams got another strike out, designated hitter PJ Zobeck doubled down the left field line to score Baso. Right fielder Kole Zimmerman then laced a double down the right field line to plate Zobeck and make the score 5-3. After another strikeout and a walk second baseman Tyrus Powe doubled to the right center gap to score both runners and even the game at 5 a piece.
FGCU first put one run on the board in the fifth to take the lead and then extended their lead in the next inning with a big inning. With Chris Garcia and Cunningham on first and second, Ruiz blooped a single to short right to load the bases. All three runners would score on back-to-back singles by Cooper and Brown. The Eagles then welcomed reliever Matt Erzar with back-to-back singles by Mathews and Perry to score two more runs and make the score 11-5. FGCU would tack on two more runs to end the inning 13-5.
Earning the win for the Eagles was starter Ryan Williams. Williams (5-2) threw seven innings and gave up six runs on eight hits while striking out nine.
Taking the loss for the Bison was Greg Ford. Ford went five and one third innings and gave up 11 runs, 9 earned, on 12 hits while striking out five.
Chris Brown had a big day at the plate finishing only a double shy of the cycle. He finished 4 for 5 with three runs scored and five runs batted in.
Mike Mathews kept up his hot hitting with a 3 for 5 day at the plate. He also scored a run and drove in two more.
Travis Cunningham, Adam Masino, Rene Ruiz, and Kip Perry all contributed two hits in the victory.
The Eagles (20-9) will play Tuesday vs. University of North Dakota starting at 7:00 pm.
