Phillips goes to 5-1 as Eagles Down Caldwell College 10-0

Fort Myers, FL – Billy Phillips threw another great game and the Eagle bats were hot all game as FGCU downed Caldwell College 10-0. The Eagles are now 21-10 on the season. FGCU came out swinging in the first to jump ahead 3-0. Right fielder Travis Cunningham led off the inning with a sharp single to right. Shortstop Rene Ruiz bunted him over to second and catcher Jason Cooper scored him with a single to right center. Third baseman Chris Brown then drove in Cooper with a deep double off the left field wall. After Center fielder Mike Howard walked, Second baseman Kip Perry drove Brown in with a single through the left side to make the score 3-0. In the bottom of the fourth the Eagles added three more runs. The big hit was a two run homer that was smoked just inside the left field foul pole by Mike Howard to make the score 7-0. The Eagles would go on to add three more in the bottom of the fifth for the final score of 10-0. Junior Billy Phillips got his sixth quality start in seven chances to go to 5-1 on the season. The ace of the Eagles staff threw six innings and gave up no runs on only two hits while striking out seven. Mike Howard led the Eagles offensively with a big day at the plate. He finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Also having a strong game were Jason Cooper and Rene Ruiz. Cooper was also 2 for 3 with two runs scored and three runs batted in and Ruiz had three hits and two runs scored. The Eagles (21-10) will play Friday vs. Teikyo Post starting at 3:00 pm.
