FGCU Sweeps Albany State in Season Opener
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University pounded out 16 hits and scored 26 runs to sweep a season-opening doubleheader from Albany State in Division II south region baseball action, 16-2 and 10-2 at the FGCU Baseball Complex Saturday.
Junior shortstop Jason Louwsma (Sanford, FL) and freshman rightfielder Shawn Griffin (Hollywood, FL) each belted grand slams to pace the FGCU attack in the opener. Junior Jason Cooper (Bradenton, FL), junior Chris Perry (Largo, FL) and junior third baseman Eric Cox (Sayville, NY) each added a pair of hits. The Eagles were aided by five Albany State errors and nine walks.
The Eagles scored in every inning but the first, scoring six runs in the second, highlighted by Louwsma’s blast to left, and five times in the fourth, including Griffin’s first college homer. The Rams picked up their two runs in the fifth off FGCU reliever Troy Beall (Kissimmee, FL).
Senior right-hander Billy Phillips (New Port Richey, FL) pitched four innings of shutout ball, allowing just one hit while striking out six, for his first win of the year. Anthony Hunter (1-1) took the loss for Albany State.
The onslaught continued for the Eagles in the nightcap. The Eagles jumped on Rams starter Demario Cash (0-1) for four runs in the first and one in the second. FGCU added five runs in the sixth. Louwsma and Perry paced a seven-hit attack with a pair of hits. Senior centerfielder David Cox (Sarasota, FL) had a three-run triple. Sophomore right-hander Chris Hassen worked six shutout innings, striking out 10 without a walk for the win. Only one Rams runner advanced to second against Hassen.
The Eagles (2-0) will host the Rams (4-2) on Sunday afternoon at noon to conclude the three-game series.
