FORT MYERS, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University took advantage of six errors to defeat No. 24 Florida Gulf Coast 8-5 in Division II south region baseball action at the FGCU Baseball Complex Sunday afternoon.
Senior designated hitter Mike Matthews (Venice, FL) and freshman right fielder Shawn Griffin (Hollywood, FL)had four hits each for FGCU (3-1). Senior first baseman Jeff Rodriguez, junior second baseman Sean McFadden and junior third baseman Mike Melo each had two-run doubles for the Knights 3-2).
The Knight struck first on a solo homer by Brian Ikalina in the second. After the Eagles tied it 1-1 in the bottom of the inning, NSU added two runs in the third, one in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.
After NSU built an 8-4 lead, FGCU rallied for one run in the ninth and had the tying run at the plate to chase Knights starter Kyle Ruwe, who came in with 27 consecutive complete games in his career, but junior right-hander Lou Leo came on to end the threat for his first save.
Ruwe, a right-hander, pitched 8 2/3 innings, allowing five runs, 10 hits and striking out seven to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Junior Jason Cooper (Bradenton, FL) added two hits for the Eagles, who touched Ruwe for 11 hits but were hindered by defensive miscues that allowed four unearned runs.
Eagles junior right-hander Les Hassen (0-1), making his first collegiate start in over two years, picked up the loss. Hassen (Port Charlotte, FL) gave up five hits and four runs, three earned, in 3 1/3 innings of work.
The Eagles travel to Florida Tech this weekend for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
