FORT MYERS, Fla. – Three pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout as Florida Gulf Coast University shut out Saint Vincent of Pennsylvania 3-0 at the FGCU Baseball Complex Tuesday night.
Sophomore right-hander Chris Hassen (Port Charlotte, Fla.) worked a perfect four innings to start the game, allowing a pair of singles while striking out four to improve to 2-0. Hassen has recorded a 0.53 ERA in 17 innings this spring. Senior right-hander Billy Phillips (New Port Richey, FL) pitched four scoreless innings of relief with six strikeouts. Junior closer Nick Perez (Cooper City, FL) struck out the side in the ninth for his first career save.
It was the third shutout of the spring for the Eagles pitching staff, which has posted a team ERA of 2.06 and held the opposition to a .209 average.
FGCU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI fielder’s choice from junior first baseman Mike Matthews (Venice, FL). Junior shortstop Jason Louwsma (Sanford, FL) put the Eagles on top 3-0 in the fourth when he crushed a pitch from Bearcats starter and loser Kip Watkins to left-center for a two-run homerun, his second of the season.
Matthews, junior outfielder Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, FL) and junior second baseman Pat Stubbe each had two singles for FGCU, which snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 5-3.
The Eagles travel to Palm Beach Atlantic for a 5 p.m. game Wednesday evening.
