Eagles Baseball Rallies to Beat Palm Beach Atlantic
LAKE WORTH, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University rallied from a 7-1 deficit Wednesday night and pulled out a 9-8 win over Palm Beach Atlantic at Bill Adeimy Field.
FGCU scored four runs in both the fourth and eighth innings for the win. Trailing 8-5 with two outs in the top of the eighth, FGCU junior shortstop Jason Louwsma (Sanford, FL) started the rally when he was hit by a pitch. Junior catcher Jason Cooper (Bradenton, FL) followed with a double down the right field line. Junior first baseman Mike Matthews (Venice, FL) then drew a walk to load the bases. Freshman outfielder Shawn Griffin (Hollywood, FL) doubled down the right field line to score Louwsma and pinch-runner Graig Smith (Venice, FL), who was running for Cooper, to make it 8-7 Sailfish.
Sophomore outfielder Kevin Burns (Fort Myers, FL) greeted reliever Scott Jarmakowicz with a sharp ground ball to second base that deflected off the glove of Raybo Lisle to score Matthews and Griffin for a 9-8 Eagles lead.
Junior left-hander Tony Korson (Bethesda, MD), the fourth FGCU pitcher, came out of the bullpen to shut down the Sailfish in the final 2 1/3 innings to improve to 2-0.
Louwsma went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs scored to lead the Eagles (6-3). Griffin was 2-for-5 with two RBI while Burns was 2-for-4 and David Cox (Sarasota, FL) also went 2-for-5, including a three-run double in the fourth inning.
Storm Kaufman was 3-for-4 for Palm Beach Atlantic (6-7).
