FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior Jason Louwsma smacked a single, double and triple Monday evening to lead Florida Gulf Coast University to a rain-delayed 15-4 victory over Gannon University at the FGCU baseball complex.
Louwsma (Sanford, FL) keyed a 15-hit attack for the Eagles. Sophomore Kevin Burns (Fort Myers), sophomore Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, FL), and freshman Shawn Griffin (Hollywood, FL) each had a pair of hits for FGCU. Griffin hit his second home run and drove in three runs.
FGCU, who have won six straight, improved to 10-3 while Gannon fell to 1-3 on their season-opening spring trip. The game was delayed 1:13 at the outset due to rain.
Gannon jumped on top 3-0 in the first inning, scoring three unearned runs on two hits and an error. The Eagles answered with their best inning of the season, plating seven runs in the bottom of the first, sending 13 batters to the plate.
FGCU scored two runs in the fourth on Griffin’s two-run blast to right center for a 9-3 lead and added four runs in the fifth and two in the seventh for their best offensive output of the spring.
Sophomore Willie Edge (Fort Myers), making his first start of the year, was the beneficiary on the mound. Edge (1-0) allowed six hits and four runs, just one earned, in five innings. Edge struck out five and walked two before freshman Brian Mastin (Venice, FL), and sophomore Drew Phillips (Pompano, FL) came on to throw two scoreless innings each.
Right-hander Rob States (0-1), one of five Golden Knights pitchers, took the loss. Zach Leslie and Chris Miller had two hits and two RBI apiece for Gannon.
