Eagles Baseball Takes Pair from Clark Atlanta
ATLANTA, GA. – Florida Gulf Coast University scored 25 runs and had 26 hits to sweep a doubleheader from Clark Atlanta University, 14-1 and 11-0, in NCAA Division II South Region play Tuesday.
Freshman catcher Graig Smith (Venice, FL) went 3-for-3 with a double, his second home run of the year and five RBI to lead the Eagles to a 14-1 win in the opener. Freshman leftfielder Shawn Griffin (Hollywood, FL) and junior designated hitter Jason Cooper (Bradenton, FL) both went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Nine players had at least one hit for FGCU. Junior shortstop Jason Louwsma (Sanford, FL) blasted a three-run home run in the third, his fourth of the year.
Junior right-hander Troy Beall (Kissimmee, FL) pitched the first four innings for his first win of the season. Beall (1-0) allowed two hits, one run and walked two while striking out five. Junior right-hander Jason Short (Naples, FL) made his first appearance of the season after suffering an off-season injury and pitched the final inning of a game shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
In the nightcap, the Eagles tallied two runs in the first, second and third innings to pull away for the 11-0 win. Louwsma hit a two-run homer in the sixth, his second home run in as many games and fifth of the year. Junior second baseman Pat Stubbe (Naples, FL) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Junior right-hander Les Hassen (Port Charlotte, FL) allowed just one hit in four innings to improve to 1-2 on the mound. Sophomore Drew Phillips (Pompano, FL) pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
FGCU (17-3) winners of 12 straight, continues its road trip with a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Morehouse College.
