FGCU Baseball Falls to Nova Southeastern

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University rolled to a 10-4 win over Florida Gulf Coast University in NCAA Division II south region baseball action Wednesday night at Swanson Stadium. Shortstop Shawn Langlois sparked an 11-hit attack for the Knights by going 4-for-6 with a run scored, two stolen bases and a RBI. The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings before scoring three times in the both the fifth and sixth innings. Catcher Steve Smith had a big three-run home run as NSU scored in six different innings to take the season series 3-2 over FGCU. The Eagles finally got on the board with no outs in the eighth inning when junior catcher Jason Cooper (Bradenton, Fla.) belted his second career grand slam home run and his fourth homer of the season for the Eagles only runs. Knights closer Lou Leo came on to hold the Eagles hitless over the final two innings. Junior right-hander Troy Beall (Kissimmee, Fla.), making his first start of the season, allowed three hits and two runs while walking four batters in three innings to drop to 2-1. Cooper finished 3-for-4 to lead FGCU offensively. It was the final home game for three Eagles players – David Cox, Tony Korson and Billy Phillips. The three were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the development of FGCU baseball prior to the game. FGCU is off this weekend before traveling to Rollins College in Winter Park next Thursday. The three-game series will open with a single game beginning at 7 p.m.
