WINTER PARK, Fla. – Rollins College rolled to an 18-7 victory over Florida Gulf Coast University in South Region baseball action Thursday evening at Alfond Stadium.
The Tars pounded out 20 hits to capture the first game of a crucial three-game regional series. Rollins (34-14) is ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Division II south region ranking while FGCU (35-15) is eighth.
Rollins took a commanding lead early in the game with a six-run first inning. The Tars, who tied a season-high in runs, added three runs in the third and two more in the fourth to build an 11-0 lead. After the Eagles scored two runs in the top of the fifth, the Tars answered with five runs to make it 16-2. FGCU plated five runs in the sixth.
The six runs in the first for Rollins were a result of five singles and a two-run triple by Chris Munoz. The Tars reached Eagles starter Jason Kiley (Palm Harbor, Fla.) for eight runs in two-plus innings of work. Six players had multiple hit games for the Tars, who tied a season-high in runs. Juan Dieguez and Chris Munoz had four hits apiece for Rollins, which had just five extra base hits.
Four Eagles - Jason Cooper (Bradenton, Fla.), Ian Manson (Plano, Tex.), David Cox (Sarasota, Fla.) and Mike Mathews (Venice, Fla.) – had two hits each. Cooper had a double and two RBI while Manson also drove in two with his fourth homer of the year.
The teams conclude their three-game series on Friday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
