Tuesday, December 27, 2005
FORT MYERS, Fla. – For the first time in its four-year history, Florida Gulf Coast University enters the upcoming baseball season nationally ranked in the preseason poll. After losing just three players to graduation off last year’s 37-18 team, FGCU enters the 2006 season ranked no. 25 in the NCAA Division II Preseason Top-40 as selected by Collegiate Baseball. It is the first appearance in Collegiate Baseball’s national poll for FGCU. The Eagles are one of seven ranked teams from the South Region. Defending national champion Florida Southern begins the season at no.1 while Tampa is ranked fifth. Tusculum (12th), Catawba (24th), Lynn (31st) and Carson-Newman (T-39th) are the other regional teams in the preseason poll. Two other South Region teams, Rollins and Barry, also received votes in the poll. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper has covered all levels of amateur baseball around the country since 1957. The Eagles open the season February 1 against Barry.
