No. 25 Baseball Opens Season with 12-3 win over Barry

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The No. 25 Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team (1-0) opened the 2006 season with a 12-3 victory over Barry University (0-1) at Swanson Stadium Wednesday night. The Eagles scored in each of the first four innings for a quick 9-1 lead. In the first inning, first baseman Mike Cleghorn (Jacksonville, Fla.) had a RBI triple and third baseman Jason Louwsma (Sanford, Fla.) a sacrifice fly for a quick 2-0 lead. FGCU added a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by freshman second baseman Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.). In the third inning, Louwsma had an RBI double, junior Geoff Rottmayer followed with an RBI single and senior Ian Manson (Plano, Texas) tripled home Rottmayer and later scored on a wild pitch for a 7-0 lead. After the Bucs scored a run off starter Chris Hassen (Port Charlotte, Fla.) in the top of the fourth, FGCU answered with a pair of runs on an RBI double by sophomore outfielder Shawn Griffin in the bottom of the inning. The Eagles would add three more runs in the eighth. FGCU, ranked No. 25 in the pre-season Division II national poll, pounded out 14 hits while Barry managed eight hits off Hassen and sophomore reliever JJ Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) Hassen, a junior right-hander, was sharp in his six innings of work. Working in front of a large crowd of professional scouts on hand, Hassen allowed just four hits and a walk in six innings, striking out eight batters before giving way to Crumbley), who struck out five in three innings of work. The Bucs scored a pair of runs in the eighth. Louwsma, a third-team Division II All-America selection last year, finished 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBI for the Eagles. Manson added three hits while Griffin and Rottmayer had two hits each. Jerry Thornton and Brian Martinez each had a pair of hits for the Bucs.
