VALDOSTA, GA. – Four Valdosta State pitchers held Florida Gulf Coast University to just five hits as the Blazers knocked off the No. 21 Eagles 7-3 Saturday night in college basketball action in the Ralph Starling Classic at Grant Field.
Senior Matt Marchant held the Eagles to three hits in five innings of work as Valdosta State jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The Blazers reached Eagles starter Jason Kiley (Palm Harbor, Fla.) for an unearned run in the third and four more runs in the fourth. They added one run in the fifth and one in the seventh.
FGCU rallied for a pair of runs in the fifth on a RBI single by sophomore Mike Cleghorn (Jacksonville, Fla.) and RBI double from senior Jason Louwsma (Sanford, Fla.). The Eagles’ final run scored on a throwing error in the seventh.
Kiley allowed seven hits and just one unearned run in seven innings while striking out four batters. VSU capitalized on three FGCU errors, three wild pitches and five passed balls.
FGCU concludes its three-game stint at the Starling Classic with an 11:00 a.m. game against Eckerd College on Sunday.
