FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University defeated Barry University 5-1 Wednesday night in an NCAA Division II South Region game at Swanson Stadium.
Three pitchers combined to scatter nine hits for FGCU (6-2 overall, 6-0 South Region) as they captured their second win against Barry this spring.
Sophomore right-hander J.J. Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) picked up his first win with four scoreless innings, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out two. Junior right-hander Justin Stiver (Englewood, Fla.) picked up his first career save with three scoreless innings of relief.
FGCU took a 2-0 lead in the third. Junior right fielder Travis Cunningham (Coral Springs, Fla.) worked a lead-off walk and senior Jason Louwsma (Sanford, Fla.) slashed a single over third baseman Cesar Aranguren’s head. A throwing error on the play by left fielder’s Bobby Hartney allowed Cunningham to score the first run of the game. Sophomore Mike Cleghorn (Jacksonville, Fla.) followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Louwsma.
Barry cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth when Andrew Frezza tripled off junior Jason Kiley (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and later scored on a wild pitch.
But FGCU answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore catcher Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.) had an RBI double and freshman Patrick Garrido scored on a groundout. Smith added an insurance run for FGCU with a two-out home run to left-center field, his first of the year, in the eighth.
Cleghorn, Garrido and Smith had two hits each for the Eagles. Alex Meneses and Frezza had two hits apiece for Barry.
Right hander Jayson Brown (0-2) took the loss for Barry (2-4).
FGCU will host Florida Tech at Swanson Stadium this weekend. The Eagles and Panthers play a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
