Baseball Team Sweeps Pair from Sailfish
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University scored 27 runs and had 30 hits to sweep a doubleheader from Palm Beach Atlantic University, 19-2 and 8-4, in NCAA Division II South Region play Saturday afternoon.
In the opener, junior Robby Rotunno (Sanford, Fla.) became the 12th player in FGCU history to hit two home runs in a game as he hit solo home runs in the second and fifth innings. Four players had three hits each as FGCU hit season highs in runs and hits in the 19-2 win. Rotunno and junior Geoff Rottmayer (Clearwater, Fla.) had five RBI each to go with their three hits while senior All-American Jason Louwsma (Sanford, Fla.) had three hits, including two doubles, and 4 RBI. Sophomore catcher Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.) had a double and two singles. Senior Ian Manson (Plano, Texas) added a two-run homer.
Junior right-hander Jason Kiley (Palm Harbor, Fla.) went the first six innings, allowing just five hits while striking out five, to earn his third win against one loss. With the win, Kiley moved into second of the FGCU all-time win list with 14. Senior left-hander Ryan Williams (Fort Myers, Fla.) struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh while freshmen Richard Bleier (South Plantation, Fla.) and Jordan Fischer (Plantation, Fla.) worked the final two innings.
In the nightcap, sophomore DH Shawn Griffin (Hollywood, Fla.) crushed a grand slam homerun to right field in the third inning to propel the Eagles. After PBA reached starter Justin Stiver (Englewood, Fla.) for a pair of runs in the fourth, FGCU answered with four more runs in the sixth, highlighted by the second home run of the year from Manson.
Louwsma, Rottmayer, freshman Pat Garrido (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and senior Chris Perry (Largo, Fla.) had two hits each for FGCU, which out-hit the Sailfish 11 to 8. Stiver improved to 3-1 with four innings of work, allowing two runs and striking out three. Right-hander Joel Gossett pitched the seven-inning complete game for PBA and took the loss.
FGCU (11-3, 11-1 South Region) hosts defending Division II national champion Florida Southern College in a three-game series at Swanson Stadium beginning Friday, March 3 with a single-game at 7 p.m.
