No. 17 Eagles defeat Cardinals 20-2

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team defeated Saginaw Valley State University on Friday at Swanson Stadium 20-2 in nine innings. Saginaw jumped on top early in the game with a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Junior Pat Kenney (Utica, Mich.) drew a walk from Eagles starter Justin Stiver (Englewood, Fla.). With two outs, senior Justin Dougthy (Oscoda, Mich.)reached on an error by third baseman Jason Louwsma to score Kenney. The Eagles answered the run scored by with one of their own in the second inning. Sophomore Shawn Griffin (Hollywood, Fla.) led off with a walk and eventually scored on a RBI groundout by freshman Pat Garrido’s (West Palm Beach, Fla.). In the third inning, the Eagles were on a roll with 11 runners crossing home plate. Griffin started it off with a two-run triple. Freshman Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) hit a single to right field scoring Griffin. Sophomore Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.) hit a double to center field scoring Coleman and junior Geoff Rottmayer (Clearwater, Fla.), who was on base after being hit by a pitch. Freshman Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a RBI single by all-American senior Jason Louwsma (Sanford, Fla.). Sophomore Mike Cleghorn (Jacksonville, Fla.), who reached after being hit by a pitch, was brought home by senior Ian Manson (Plano, Texas) who hit a single to right field. The last three runners were scored by Griffin who hit a single to right field and Rottmayer who hit a double. In the top of the fifth inning the Cardinals scored their second run starting with a single to center field by freshman Pete Vanderkolk (Jenison, Mich.). Senior Jason Burghardt (Temerance, Mich.) then stepped up and hit a single to the Eagles short stop advancing Vanderkolk and landed on first base. Senior Dale Marsden (Sarnia, Ontario) was hit by a pitch loading the bases. Sophomore Brandon Fanion (Marysville, Mich.) hit a single to left field giving Vanderkolk the chance to score. In the sixth inning the Eagles scored six runs on several errors by the Cardinals. Smith was the first to score, hitting a double down the left field line and was brought home on a single by Upchurch. Cleghorn then stepped up to bat and hit a single to center field deep to score Upchurch. Louwsma made it on base from on error on the Cardinals third baseman and the bases were quickly loaded after Manson was then hit by a pitch. Cleghorn scored on a wild pitch. Griffin followed with a walk before Louwsma scored on a passed ball. Senior Chris Perry (Largo, Fla.) was hit by a pitch scoring Manson and Garrido hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Griffin. In the seventh inning the Eagles hit two sacrifice flies for the final two runs. Saginaw starting pitcher Aaron Dorgan (Jackson, Mich.) who pitched two innings with three strikeouts, four hits and six runs, took the loss. The winning pitcher for the Eagles was Stiver (4-1) who pitched five innings striking out five Cardinals. In the sixth inning, senior Troy Beall (Kissimmee, Fla.) came in for the Eagles, he held the Cardinals to one hit and recorded four strikeouts. Freshman Jordan Fischer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) finished for the Eagles in the ninth inning keeping the Cardinals out with no hits and no runs. The Eagles are 15-5 while the Cardinals fall to 7-2. The Eagles play Regis University of Denver, Colorado Saturday March 11 at 1:00 pm.
