No. 23 FGCU Baseball Downs Post 9-2
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team picked up its third straight victory with a 9-2 win over Post University (Conn.) in NCAA Division II baseball action at Swanson Stadium Tuesday night.
No. 23 FGCU improves to 17-5. Post, under first-year head coach and former major leaguer Rico Brogna, falls to 5-12.
The Eagles broke open a 1-1 game with a run in the fourth, three runs in the sixth and four more runs in the seventh.
Freshman centerfielder Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) tied a career-high with three hits and eight Eagles scored a run as FGCU banged out 12 hits against four Post pitchers.
Sophomore designated hitter Mike Cleghorn (Jacksonville, Fla.) and senior third baseman Jason Louwsma (Sanford, Fla.) had a pair of hits each for FGCU. Senior second baseman Chris Perry (Largo, Fla.) and sophomore catcher Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.) had two RBI’s each.
Senior right-hander Troy Beall (Kissimmee, Fla.) pitched a strong six innings in his first start of the year, allowing just two singles and one earned run while striking out six.
FGCU will host Post again on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Swanson Stadium.
