FGCU Baseball Splits Double Header with Lynn
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University and Lynn University split a South Region baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Swanson Stadium, with FGCU winning the opener, 9-1, and Lynn coming back to take the nightcap 14-7. The Eagles are now 34-11 overall while the Knights stand at 32-19.
Senior left-hander Ryan Williams (Estero, Fla.) held Lynn in check for the first six innings of the opener. Williams (4-1) allowed just three singles and one run while striking out six. Senior right-hander Troy Beall (Kissimmee, Fla.) shut out the Knights over the final three innings on three hits to earn his first save of the season.
The Eagles offense, meanwhile, pounded out 13 hits in the first game. FGCU scored three runs in the first inning and four more in the third to cruise to its’ sixth consecutive win. The Eagles added single runs in the fourth and sixth. Six players had two hits each in the game. Senior third baseman Jason Louwsma (Sanford, Fla.), who went 2-for-5, had three RBI, including his ninth home run of the season. He is now hitting .402 on the season. Sophomore Shawn Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) and freshman Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) had two hits and two RBI each.
In the nightcap, Lynn exploded for a 10-run fourth inning to snap a 3-3 deadlock to salvage the final game of the three-game series. Griffin had three hits, including two doubles, in the losing effort for FGCU. Freshman Pat Garrido (West Palm Beach, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Coleman went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a RBI. The Eagles travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to face Stillman College in back-to-back doubleheaders on Tuesday and Wednesday.
