FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team released its 2007 schedule, announced head coach Dave Tollett.
Entering their fifth season of competition, and the final year of NCAA Division-II Independent, the Eagles open the season on the road against Barry on February 1. The home opener is the following day when FGCU opens a three game series with Clark Atlanta.
The schedule features 23 home games including the 2007 FGCU Spring Break Tournament. The Eagles host four Division I opponents highlighted by perennial NCAA tournament participant Notre Dame. The tournament runs from March 15-March 18. Other participants in the event include Harvard, Dayton and New York Tech.
Other highlights from the 2007 schedule include a trip to defending national champion Tampa for a three-game series on March 23 and 24. The Eagles play 14 games against five teams that advanced to the 2006 NCAA Division II tournament this season. The Eagles also will travel to future Atlantic Sun Conference rival, and defending league champion, Jacksonville on May 2.
The Eagles advanced to the NCAA South Regional for the first time with a 41-17 record last year. The Eagles had a pair of players drafted in the 2006 MLB draft and return several key contributors. FGCU will be a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference at the conclusion of this season. The A-Sun has sent multiple teams to NCAA Regional play nine times in the last 10 years.
