MIAMI SHORES, Fla., - The 16th ranked Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team dropped their season opener to Barry 6-1. Jayson Brown picked up the win for the Bucs while Jason Kiley (Palm Harbor, Fla.) took the loss for the Eagles.
After falling behind early 1-0, the Eagles remained hitless until the fourth when Stephen Rassell (Lake City, Fla.) led off the inning with a single to center. Rassel advanced to second on a groundball back to the pitcher from Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.). Rassel later scored on a double by Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) to tie the game at one.
Barry quickly struck back in bottom of the fourth after a two run homerun by Andrew Freeza. Barry doesn’t stop there, in the bottom of the fifth the Buccaneers add two more as Frank Lorenzo and Orestes Gonzalez record singles driving in both Brett Rossi and Mitch Rodriguez.
The Bucs pitching continued to shutdown the Eagles while adding one more insurance run in the eighth.
Brown and Ray Rhodes combined to fan 14 FGCU batters, holding the Eagles to two hits. Brown went five innings and allowed two hits and one run in picking up the win. Rhodes pitched four scoreless innings in relief.
Jason Kiley (0-1) started for the Eagles and received his first loss after going 4.1 innings. Kiley gave up six hits, five earned runs and struck out four batters. Richard Bleier (Davie, Fla.) pitched 3.2 innings and gave up one run off of three hits.
The Eagles host Clarke Atlanta in their home opener tomorrow at 7:00 pm in Swanson Stadium.
