FORT MYERS, Fla., - Two FGCU baseball players were selected to the All-South Region team voted on by head coaches in the Sunshine State Conference, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and South Atlantic Athletic Conference as well as eight independents.
Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) was selected to the first team while Richard Bleier (Davie, Fla.) was a second team selection. Borrell was also tabbed as the gold glove winner at third base. Borrell was also selected as a Daktronics All-Region second team member. The junior appeared in 56 games, starting 55. He led the team in RBI and triples while finishing among the NCAA leaders in both categories. Borrell hit .359, second best on the team.
Bleier finished the season with a 3.60 ERA and an 8-2 record. He had 17 appearances, making 13 starts in 85.0 innings pitched this season. Bleier, a left-handed sophomore, struck out 71 batters on the season. He recorded several key wins for the Eagles this season including a road win against #1 and defending national champion Tampa as well as a win over Notre Dame.
The Eagles finished with their second consecutive 40 win season and appearance in the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. The Eagles will now join NCAA Division I and the Atlantic Sun Conference for the 2007-08 year. The baseball team will return eight starters and four of the top-five pitchers during their first season in Division I.
