FORT MYERS, Fla. – For the second straight year, the Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team is ranked in the top 25 in the NCAA Division II Preseason Top-40 as selected by Collegiate Baseball. Coming off of a 41-17 season and a trip to the NCAA South Regional, the Eagles are ranked No. 16 in the first preseason poll that was released last week. Tampa, last season’s D II National Champion, holds the No. 1 spot. The Eagles will head to Tampa in late March for a three-game series with the defending champs. Georgia College & State, Cal State Chico, Florida Southern and Montevallo round out the top five teams. FGCU will face off against its in-state rival, Florida Southern, four times including a regular season-ending game in Lakeland, Fla. on May 11. The Eagles will also take on Lynn, Barry, and Saint Leo this season. All three teams received votes but failed to make the Top-40 in the preseason poll. FGCU will open the 2007 campaign against the Barry Buccaneers in Miami Shores, Fla. on February 1. On Friday, February 2, the Eagles face Clark Atlanta in their home-opener.
