16th Ranked Baseball Team Wins Third Straight

FORT MYERS, Fla., - The 16th ranked FGCU baseball squad improved to 3-1 after completing a sweep of Clark Atlanta with a 13-1 and 27-0 in a double header at Swanson Stadium on Saturday afternoon. FGCU scored first, putting up three runs in the second inning. Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) reached after being hit by a pitch and after singles by Victor Rodriguez (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupitor, Fla.), Richie Sowell (Madison, Fla.) drove in the first run of the game. Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.) followed with a single to score two more runs. The Eagles added five runs in the fifth inning and tacked on two more in the sixth to go up 10-0. Four Eagles had multiple hit games including Rodriguez who went 2-for-2 in the game, he also drew four walks. Sowell and Smith drove in three runs apiece for the Eagles. J.J. Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) picked up his first win of the year after going 6.0 innings while striking out eight batters. Crumbley allowed two hits and one walk to pick up his first year. In the second game, FGCU got on the board in the second inning as Rodriguez led off with a double. Sowell sent him home with a single later in the inning. Ozzie Borrell (Miami, Fla.), who reached on a walk, later scored on a wild pitch. In the third inning, the Eagles sent 14 batters up to the plate in the third inning before the Panthers recorded their first out. The Eagles sent 18 batters to the plate, scoring 12 runs off of eight hits in the third. FGCU tacked on eight more runs in the fourth inning and five more in the sixth. Rodriguez was 3-for-3 in the second game, going 5-for-5 on the day and 8-for-9 for the series. Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) and peacock each went 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBI. Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, Fla.) was also 4-for-4 in the game. Tim Bromley (Jacksonville, Fla.) earned the win. The Eagles hit the road for a for a five game road trip to Benedict and Paine next week. FGCU returns to Swanson Stadium Friday February 16, when they host 4th ranked Florida Southern.
