AUGUSTA, Ga.- The #16th ranked Florida Gulf Coast baseball team saw their five game win streak snapped as they split a doubleheader with Paine. The Eagles lost game one 5-4, and bounced back to win game two 7-3. Game one remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Tigers pushed across three runs. The Eagles were hitless until Junior Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupitor, Fla.) hit a triple down the left field line to lead off the top of the 5th. After a walk by Junior Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.), Sophomore Richie Sowell (Madison, Fla.) cut the Tigers lead down to two by bringing in Scarduzio on a sac fly to centerfield. In the top of the sixth, Sophomore Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) started the inning off with a single up the middle followed by a stolen base. Two pitches later, Junior Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.) lined a base hit to centerfield and Upchurch scored on a fielding error by the center fielder to cut the Tigers lead to one. The Eagles took the lead in the top of the seventh 4-3 but quickly lost the lead after the Tigers brought in two runs on a single by James Dudley. That proved to be enough as the Eagles lost game one 5-4. Junior Luis Pardo (Miami, Fla.) started and pitched six innings for the Eagles. Pardo allowed four hits, one walk and struck out six batters. Sophomore Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) received his first lose of the season after he pitched two innings, giving up four runs on four hits with a pair strikeouts. Game two: The Tigers jumped ahead early, scoring three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles failed to respond until the third inning. With runners on first and third, Freshman Chris Alessandria (Jacksonville, Fla.) laid down push bunt to bring across Junior Paul Fibbe (Jacksonville, Fla.), bringing the Eagles within two. In the fourth, Scarduzio led off the inning with a line drive single to right field, followed by a double down the right field line by Junior Victor Rodriguez (Cape Coral, Fla.). Rassel brought in Scarduzio on a ground ball to first to cut the lead to one. The Eagles tied the game in the sixth when Rodriguez lined a two-out single to right field that scored Junior Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.). With a leadoff homerun by Fibbe, and an inside the park homerun by Scarduzio in the seventh, the Eagles scored four and held on to win game two 7-3. Junior J.J Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) pitched a complete game, only allowing three runs on four hits with nine strikeouts. Crumbley improves his record to 2-0. The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow February 9th at noon in Augusta, Ga., for game three against Paine College.
