Baseball Takes Paine Series with 22-3 win

AUGUSTA, Ga., - The 22nd ranked Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team took the deciding game in a three-game series against Paine College with a 22-3 win. Pete Woodworth (St. Petersburg, Fla.) earned the win for the Eagles to improve to 2-0 on the year. FGCU scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead. Paine answered with three of their own in the bottom of the fourth to even the score. The Eagles regained their three run advantage in the bottom of the fifth and added three more to open up an insurmountable lead. Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) went 4-for-5 with one RBI, three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) was 3-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored and Vinnie Scarduzzio (Jupitor, Fla.) was 5-for-6 with four RBI and five runs scored. Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) went 2-for-5 with a three-run inside the park homerun. Woodworth went 5.0 innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out four batters. Derek Shaw (New Port Richey, Fla.) pitched 2.0 scoreless innings and Tim Bromley (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Justin Miller (Bell Glade, Fla.) each tossed one scoreless inning for the Eagles. The Eagles will have a week off to prepare for 3rd ranked Florida Southern who travels to Swanson Stadium on Friday February 16th.
