Baseball Falls in Nailbiter With Florida Southern

FORT MYERS, Fla., - The #3rd ranked Florida Southern Moccasins handed #28 FGCU a 3-2 loss on Friday night at Swanson. The Mocs improve to 9-0 while FGCU falls to 7-3. The Mocs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Kyle Patrick led off with a single and Will Cherry followed with a double. Andrew Grutka drove in the first run with a groundout to second base. FSC held a 3-0 lead going into the bottom the fifth. In the fifth, Victor Rodriguez (Cape Coral, Fla.) led off with a double and later advanced on a passed ball. Rodriguez scored as Chris Alessandria (Jacksonville, Fla.) placed a sacrifice bunt down towards first base. The Eagles added a second run in the seventh as Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) led off the inning with a bunt. Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored Borrell with a single through the left side. The Eagles tried to put together a rally in the ninth as Rodriguez singled with one out. Mollica nearly hit a game winning homerun, but came up just short for the second out of the inning. Stephen Rassell (Lake City, Fla.), who pinch ran for Rodriguez, reached third on a throwing error by pitcher Brad Davidson. After an eight-pitch at bat, Alessandria grounded out to end the game. Dan Albritton earned the win for the Mocs, scattering six hits through 7.0 innings. He struck out six batters and allowed two runs in the game. Derek Lokey went 2-for-2 for the Mocs and scored one run. Rodriguez went 2-for-3 for the Eagles and scored a run while Alessandria drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles. Richard Bleier (Davie, Fla.) suffered his first loss of the year, holding the Mocs to four hits in 6.0 innings of work. The Eagles and Mocs resume their three game series on Sunday with a doubleheader in Lakeland, Fla.
