#25 Baseball Improves to 19-7 With 7-3 Win
FORT MYERS, Fla., - The #25 FGCU baseball team rallied from a 3-0 hole to win the finale of the Beef O’Brady’s St. Patrick’s Week Baseball Classic with a 7-3 win over New York Tech on Saturday night. The Eagles improve to 19-7 while the Bears fall to 0-7 on the year.
Tech scored in the first as Craig Binick singled to lead off and stole second. Mike LaLuna grounded out to drive in Binick for the games first run. Both starting pitchers were in control until the seventh inning. With one out, Denten Neill singled before a pair of Eagle errors led to a pair of runs to give Tech a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles responded in the bottom of the seventh with three runs to tie the score. With two outs, Josh Upchurch and Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) each drew walks before pinch-hitter Victor Rodriguez (Cape Coral, Fla.) tripled to drive the pair in. Rodriguez also scored on the play after an errant throw to third. The Bears pitching issued six walks and fired three wild pitches in the eighth inning, allowing the Eagles to score four runs with two outs and take a 7-3 lead.
Jason Kiley tossed 6.1 innings for the Eagles, striking out seven batters on the evening. He allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits. J.J. Crumbley picked up his fifth win in relief, going 2.0 innings for the Eagles to finish the game. Joe Esposito fanned nine batters in 6.2 innings for Tech. Andrew Gurrasi received the loss, going 1.0 innings with four runs allowed, all earned. Upchurch finished the night 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Upchurch recorded two of the Eagles four hits as FGCU drew 13 walks on the evening.
FGCU will be in action again on Wednesday night when they host Hillsdale at 7:00 pm at Swanson Stadium.
