FORT MYERS, Fla., - With a four-run outburst in the fourth inning, the 18th ranked FGCU Eagles improved to 23-9 by beating the Buccaneers of Barry University 6-3.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard in the first inning on an Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) sacrifice fly to taking a 1-0 lead. The Bucs answered right back in the second inning as a leadoff walk by Richard Bleier (Davie, Fla.) came around to score on a two out single by Nick Shaw. Barry took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third on an RBI double by Gabriel Casanova and an RBI single by Carlos Gomez.
FGCU erupted for four runs in the fourth inning which turned out to be the difference in the game as Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) got the scoring going with a sacrifice fly which the right fielder dropped and would have been the second out of the inning. After a Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) pop out to the shortstop the Eagles put together a two out rally as Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) hit a bases loaded two run single to give FGCU a 4-3 lead. Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.) capped off the inning with another two out RBI single on a sharp line drive to left field.
The Eagles tacked on another run in the fifth as Borrell scored on a error by the Buccaneers left fielder Josh Vargas taking a 6-3 lead.
Bleier and relief pitcher Peter Woodworth (St. Petersburg, Fla.) blanked Barry from the third inning on giving the Eagles a 6-3 victory.
Bleier struck out 12 Buccaneer batters while walking only one as he picked up his 5th win of the year going seven innings. Woodworth picked up his third save as he threw two scoreless innings.
The Eagles and the Buccaneers will rap up the weekend series tomorrow as they will play two, first pitch is at 1:00 PM at Swanson Stadium.
