FORT MYERS, Fla., - The #30 FGCU baseball team used extra innings to down Flagler 5-4 on Friday night at Swanson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 24-11 while Flagler falls to 17-22.
Flagler scored first with a pair of runs in the second inning as Shane Darnofall doubled to lead off the inning. After a throwing error, Billy Johnson singled to score the two runs. FGCU got one run back in their half of the inning with a leadoff homer from Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, Fla.). Flagler scored again in the fourth courtesy of an FGCU error with two outs.
FGCU scored single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth inning to take a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning. The Saints scored on a two-out single to send the game into extra innings. In the 11th, Chris Alessandria (Jacksonville, Fla.) singled to lead off and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.) singled to bring home the winning run.
Shane Darnofall went 4-for-6 for the Saints while Billy Johnson went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Brandon Rapoza took the loss, falling to 1-5 on the year. Pete Woodworth (St. Petersburg, Fla.) picked up his third win of the year in relief. FGCU starter Richard Bleier (Davie, Fla.) fanned nine batters in his seven innings of work while J.J. Crumbley struck out six Saints in his 3.0 innings. Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) was 3-for-5 for FGCU while Mollica was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
The Eagles and Saints will conclude a three-game series in a doubleheader tomorrow at 1:00 pm at Swanson Stadium.
